SUMMARY:FAU MoD Lecture: Promoting Gender Equity in Mathematics: Strategies and Solutions
DESCRIPTION:Date: Mon. June 3, 2024\nEvent: FAU MoD Lecture\nEvent type: On-site / Online\nOrganized by: FAU MoD, the Research Center for Mathematics of Data at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (Germany)\nFAU MoD Lecture: Promoting Gender Equity in Mathematics: Strategies and Solutions\nSpeaker: Prof. Dr. Jaqueline Godoy Mesquita\nAffiliation: UnB, University of Brasília | SBM, President of the Brazilian Mathematical Society (Brazil)\nAbstract. In this talk, I will explore the gender gap in mathematics, highlighting regional differences and examining the underlying causes of this disparity. We will delve into initiatives aimed at increasing the representation of women in mathematics and discuss strategies to combat bias within the field. Additionally, I will outline various opportunities available to women in mathematics, emphasizing the importance of fostering an inclusive environment that supports their growth and success.\n\nSee poster\nBIO- Jaqueline Godoy Mesquita is professor at the Department of Mathematics from University of Brasília, Brazil. She is the president of the Brazilian Mathematical Society (2023-2025). In 2012, she won the International Bernd-Aulbach Prize for Students in 2012, awarded by the International Society of Difference Equations. She was selected to participate at the 5th Heidelberg Laureate Forum 2017 and was selected to be an Oberwolfach Leibniz Fellow during 2018. She was elected a young affiliated member of The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS-LACREP) (2018–2022), and of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences (2018–2022). In 2019, she was Capes/Alexander von-Humboldt experienced researcher. She won the prize “For Women in Sciences” awarded by L’Oreal, UNESCO and Brazilian Academy of Sciences in 2019 at the category of “Mathematics”. In 2023, she won the prize “Science, She Says” Awarded by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and in the same year, she received the title “Cavaliere dell’Ordine della Stella d’Italia” (Knight of the Order of the Star of Italy) by given by the Italian government. In 2023, she received the prize “Distinguished Researcher from Federal District”, Brazil, Awarded by FAPDF.\n* Don’t miss out Jaqueline as speaker at the Trends in Mathematical Sciences by FAU MoD @June 2024 and her contribution as part of the Scientific Committee.\nAUDIENCE\nThis is a hybrid event (On-site/online) open to: Public, Students, Postdocs, Professors, Faculty, Alumni and the scientific community all around the world.\nWHEN\nMon.
