SUMMARY:FAU DCN-AvH Jr. Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Next Thursday May 16, 2024:\nOrganized by: FAU DCN-AvH, Chair for Dynamics, Control, Machine Learning and Numerics – Alexander von Humboldt Professorship at FAU, Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (Germany)\n12:00H\nTitle: Exploring the Dynamics of Phase Transitions: A Journey into Gamma-Convergence\nSpeaker: Christopher Sorg\nAffiliation: PhD student at FAU DCN-AvH ( http://www.dcn.nat.fau.eu ) – Chair for Dynamics, Control, Machine Learning and Numerics – Alexander von Humboldt Professorship.\nAbstract. This presentation delves into the fascinating realm of phase transitions, unraveling the intricacies through the lens of Gamma-Convergence. The centerpiece of our exploration is the renowned Modica-Mortola theorem, a cornerstone result shedding light on the behavior of phase transitions in variational problems. Additionally, we illuminate the path to understanding Gamma-Convergence within a metric space framework, offering a concrete example to illustrate its application. Join us on this journey as we uncover the underlying structures governing phase transitions, from theoretical foundations to practical demonstrations.\n12:30H\nTitle: Fokker-Planck-equations, renormalized solutions and (a little bit) optimal control\nSpeaker: Christian Lange\nAffiliation: PhD student at FAU DCN-AvH ( http://www.dcn.nat.fau.eu ) – Chair for Dynamics, Control, Machine Learning and Numerics – Alexander von Humboldt Professorship.\nAbstract. The talk is about the topics of my Master thesis and my beginning PhD-project “Renormalized solutions in optimal control”. We are going to look at a solution technique for PDEs, renormalized solutions, for the example of a Fokker-Planck-equation with low regular drift (of bounded variation in space). This is based on a paper of Dejun Luo, “Fokker-Planck type equations with Sobolev diffusion coefficients and BV drift coefficients”. At the end of the talk I give a little glimpse on the problems concerning optimal control of this equation.\nWHEN\nThu.
