More specifically, my work is oriented to the understanding of wave propagation, its numerical approximation and the development of suitable and efficient control mechanisms. These tops find applications in a variety of frameworks, involving relevant natural phenomena and industrial processes, such as the shape design in aeronautics, or wave propagation on networks.
I had the opportunity to contribute to the training of a number of young researchers. In particular I was the advisor of more than twenty PhD Thesis of former students that now develop their careers in countries such as Brazil, Chile, China, Mexico, Rumania, Spain, etc.
The research of our team is being funded by several agencies and, in particular, by the European Research Council through the NUMERIWAVES in 2010, DyCon in 2016 and CoDeFeL in 2022 and by the Spanish MINECO through the Project MTM2014-52347- “Methods for numerical simulation and control of environmental flows platforms”. In fact our research has been continuously funded by the Spanish Ministries for Science since 1990. In 2022 I was awarded the W.T. and Idalia Reid Prize of SIAM.
I had also the opportunity to contribute building some new infrastructures for research. In particular I was (2008-2012) the Founding Scientific Director of the BCAM – Basque Center for Applied Mathematics in Bilbao, Basque Country, Spain. At the occasion of the launching of that Center I coined the following sentence that summarizes my view on Applied Mathematics as an engine for development: “We understand Applied Mathematics both as a way of getting into the depth of mathematics and also of interacting with all other scientists and R&D agents. At the heart of Basque Country, Bilbao is the right place for attaining these two objectives and BCAM will facilitate them with the right atmosphere, infrastructure and vision”.

Trabajando en estos temas he tenido oportunidad de conocer gente fascinante de la que he intentado aprender y llegar a algunos lugares remotos inolvidables.
He tenido el privilegio de dirigir más de veinte Tesis Doctorales y mis antiguos discípulos ocupan ahora plazas en centros diseminados por todo el mundo: Brasil, Chile, China, España, México, Rumanía,…
Nuestra investigación se financia a través diversos proyectos y programas entre los que cabe destacar el Proyecto Advanced Grant del European Research Council – ERC con NUMERIWAVES en 2010, DyCon en 2016 y CoDeFeL en 2022 y del MINECO a través del proyecto MTM2014-52347- “Métodos para plataformas de simulación numérica y control de flujos ambientales”. De hecho la investigación de nuestro grupo ha sido continuamente financiada por los Ministerios españoles de Ciencia desde 1990.
También he tenido la oportunidad de contribuir a crear nuevas infraestructuras par alas Matemáticas. En particular, entre 2008 y 2012 tuve el privilegio de fundar el BCAM – Basque Center for Applied Mathematics en Bilbao, País Vasco. Con la ocasión del lanzamiento del centro en septiembre del 2008 acuñamos la siguiente frase que refleja fielmente nuestro punto de vista sobre la herramienta de desarrollo que proporciona la Matemática Aplicada: “Entendemos la Matemática Aplicada como el camino para lograr adentrarnos en las Matemáticas y para la interacción con otros científicos y agentes de I+D. Es Bilbao, en el corazón de Euskadi, el lugar idóneo para conseguir estos dos objetivos, en la atmósfera adecuada, con la infraestructura y visión de BCAM”.
Nire ikerkerta lana Matematika Aplikatuaren arloan kokatzen da. Aztertzen ditudan gaiak, gehien bat, Deribatu Partzialetako Ekuazioen ingurukoak dira, berauen Kontrola eta Analisi Numerikoa direlarik aztergai nagusiak. Arlo guzti hauek elkar loturik daude eta Ikerketa, Garapen eta Berrikuntza sisteman agertzen diren prozesu gehienetan agertzen dira. Matematikaren arloan egiten dugun ikerketa lana gai aplikatu hauek aztertzeko, simulatzeko, kudeatzeko eta kontrolatzeko metodoak sortzea dute asmo nagusi gisa. Gure lanaren aplikazio anitzen artean, azpimarragarrienak diseinua aeronautikan eta sareetango uhinen hedapena dira.
Hainbat kiderekin elkar lanean aritzeko aukera izan dut. Bereziki nire zuzendaritzapean hogeitik gora gaztek burutu dute beraien doktoradutza Tesia, Hauek orain beraien karrerak garatzen dituzte hainbat lekutan eta bereziki, Brasil, Chile, China, Rumania, eta Espanian.
Gure ikerketa lana agentzia anitzek finanziatzen dute, eta bereziki, European Research Council-ek (ERC) “DyCon: Krontol Dinamikoa” delako Advanced Grant baten bidez (“NUMERIWAVES” iaragean: 2010-2015). Aldi berean Espaniako MINECO-k ere gure ikerketa finantziatzen du “Simulazio numerikorako plataformen eta ingurumen fluxuen kontrolerako metodoak” priektuaren bidez (MTM2014-52347). Izan ere Espanikiako Zienztia Ministerioek 1900tik aurrera gure ikerketa finantziatu dute etengabean.
Matematikaren ikerketarako egiturak eta azpiegiturak sortzeko ere aukera izan dugu. Adibidez, 2008-2012 lau urteetan, BCAM –Basque Center for Applied Mathematics ikerketa zentroaren Zuzendari Zientifiko Sortzailea izateko ohorea izan nuen. Berau sortzeko orduan, 2008ko Iralean, honela azaldu genuen Matematikak gure gizartearen garapenean joka ditzaken lana: “Matematika aplikatua modu dual edo bikoitz batean ulertzen dugu. Alde batetik Matematika munduaren sakontasuna ausnartzeko bide bezala eta, bestalde, beste zientzilari eta garapen+ikerkuntzako ahaldunekin elkar lanean aritzeko tresna gisa. Euskal Herriko bihotzean, Bilbon, arlo hauek garatzeko aukera berria sortu dugu, tokirik oberenean, BCAM-en, bere azpiegitura eta ikuspen estrategikoari esker”.
