Title: Dark Matter: A Glimpse into the Invisible
Speaker: Francisco Xavier Linares Cedeño
Affiliation: Visiting scientist. Michoacan University of Saint Nicholas of Hidalgo
Abstract. Dark matter remains one of the most profound mysteries in modern physics and cosmology. In this colloquium, I will introduce the concept of dark matter by first revisiting what we mean by matter and how we know that the visible Universe does not tell the whole story. I will then outline the role of gravity—from Newtonian gravity to Einstein’s theory of General Relativity—as the primary tool through which the existence of dark matter is inferred. Finally, I will discuss how the Vera C. Rubin Observatory will play a central role in the study of dark matter through an ambitious observational program that will map the Universe over the next decade, producing one of the most detailed and comprehensive surveys of cosmic structure ever achieved.
