Abstract:
The aim of this course is to present an overview of the mathematical techniques used in the optimal design of surfaces and bodies. We will present the differentiation methods of functionals with respect a variation of shape in the domain where they are defined, and show how we can apply them to explain the partial differential equations that model the motion of fluids, namely, the Navier-Stokes equations. Moreover, we will use these tools in order to study the optimal design problem in typical external and internal flow applications: drag reduction and minimization of energy losses in ducted flows.
