Free boundary problems (also called moving interface problems) are systems of partial differential equations in a domain, a portion of whose boundary is unknown a priori. This portion is called a free boundary. We summarize some of the important developments related to the analysis and controllability of non-stationary free boundary problems, and present an outline for attacking our current problem of interest, the porous medium equation.
